85—and Gorgeous
The renovation of Norfolk’s Crispus Attucks Theater has taken a long time—but the results are worth the effort
by Montague Gammon III
Renovated old theaters are routinely described as grande dames who have undergone face lifts. Where Norfolk’s 1919 Crispus Attucks Theatre is concerned, the reconstructive surgery is more on the order of the heroic efforts that brought television’s fictional Six Million Dollar Man back to life.
In fact, the eight million dollar project has put just about six million into renovating the old theater and office building complex at the corner of Church Street and Virginia Beach Boulevard. Another two million has gone into attached new construction that will house offices, meeting rooms and support facilities for the facility when it formally opens in October.
